Artificial Intelligence: A Sharp Tool for Process Safety, not a Blunt Instrument

Simon has over 30 years’ experience in risk management and process safety across the oil and gas, chemical, mining, transport, and utilities sectors, following an early career as an offshore Production Engineer with BP Exploration. He is an experienced ICAM incident investigator and HSE auditor, with specialist expertise in quantitative risk assessment, project risk management, training, and facilitation. Simon was among the first IChemE‑registered Professional Process Safety Engineers in Australia. He also volunteers with Scouts Victoria as State Commissioner for Risk and Safety and will serve as Director of Risk when 10,000 youth attend the 2028 Australian Jamboree.

Shyamal Sharma and Paresh Kerai are specialists in process safety and operational technology cyber security at MWS Risk, focusing on the intersection of control systems, cyber security, and operational risk. Shyamal is a Chartered Professional Engineer and TÜV Certified Functional Safety Engineer with over 20 years of experience in process safety across the energy, resources, infrastructure, and industrial sectors. Paresh is an Operational Technology (OT) cyber security specialist whose work focuses on cyber risk assessments, security governance frameworks, and the implementation of standards such as IEC 62443 and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework to strengthen the resilience of industrial control systems.

Beyond the PHA: Major Hazard Management for Battery Energy Storage Systems Using Bow Tie Analysis

Michela is a chemical engineer specialising in major hazard risk management, with over 15 years of industry experience. She has worked closely with several Major Hazard Facilities in the preparation of Safety Cases and the ongoing management of critical controls, including facilities in the energy and resources sectors. She has assisted Comcare in conducting audits of safety management systems and controls for multiple Major Hazard Facilities.
Michela has experience in consequence modelling, quantitative risk analysis and facilitating hazard identification and HAZOP workshops. This experience has extended to Battery Energy Storage Systems and other sectors, including water and electricity generation.
